On selected nights each month the Urban HUG Team makes a trip to a parking lot at the corner of Peachtree Street and Trinity Avenue in downtown Atlanta. Their purpose: to share God's love with about 200 homeless men, women and children who line up each night waiting on food to be delivered.

But the food to be served is not just food for the tummy, it is also food for the soul. For on each visit a biblical message is given and the Gospel is shared. Often, a guest or two will accept Christ as their personal savior.

Most volunteers will serve on the food line, filling clam-shell containers with food to be distributed to the homeless as they pass the line. A few will mingle with the guests, providing a ear when they need to talk or open arms when they need a hug. Some will pass out bibles, devotionals or Christian tracts providing the guests with something to encourage them when the morning arrives.

The Urban HUG Team street ministry is part of a coalition of churches providing meals for the homeless at this specific location. It is the obligation of the team to provide meals on the designated nights, regardless of the weather conditions. So it is important for the volunteers to dress appropriately for the anticipated weather.

Your help is needed. Volunteers are needed to serve the food, distribute materials and to witness to the guests. One person must give the message each night. Individuals and small groups are encouraged to provide and prepare the meals to be served – usually a simple fare.
