04/06/2010: "Makes Me Belly Feel Good"
By Melissa Cuthbertson Editors Note: On 2010-03-27 two HUG Cookouts were held simultaneously. One, at Toby Springs Lane in McDonough was conducted by the CBC Celebrate Recovery Outreach Team and the other, at Walnut Grove Apartments in Jonesboro by the Local Out-Team. This account is from the Toby Springs Lane event. The day before, Tristan and I bought bibles from the Christian bookstore to give away at the cookout. I had him count how many we had bought to get him more involved rather than just going to a store with mommy. I used that time to talk to him about how important it is to give to others. That the bible says we are to love one another and help people in need. We also made his very own Out-Team shirt that he helped paint. He wore it proudly. Once at the cookout we helped get everything set up and people started to arrive. We set up chairs in a circle, which was perfect for me to keep Tristan corralled in. While he playing inside the circle he decide to pick some flowers that were in the grass. He handed one to me with a huge grin on his sweet little face. I thanked him with a hug and a kiss and I think he got it at the moment what we were there to do that day. God showed His love through my son that day! The little things do matter!! I want to have the heart of a child when giving to others and that same grin on my face when I do it. It touched my heart and I know it touched those lady’s hearts as well. IT MAKES ME BELLY FEEL GOOD TO GIVE!! Melissa Cuthbertson
I told him that if he wanted to give flowers to some other people he was welcome to. So he picked two more flowers and walked over to a lady sitting on a chair. He handed her the flower with that grin. I am not sure she spoke any English but it didn’t matter. He didn’t have to say a thing. I captured it on film! He then gave another woman next to her a flower. He was really proud of himself it was all over his face. I asked him if it made his belly feel good and he said “YES” then he walked away.
